*Purpose: To understand the importance of molecular expression of Caveolin-1 in BKV nephropathy seen after kidney transplantion.
*Methods: The kidney transplant patients who had a graft biopsy due to BK virus viremia were divided into two groups according to the BK virus nephropathy found in kidney biopsies (Group I: Viremia +, Nephropathy + / Group II: Viremia+,Nephropathy-). Immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy specimens with anti-caveolin-1 immunoglobulin were performed and compared between the two groups.
*Results: Immunohistochemical staining of the 31 specimens with anti-caveolin-1 immunoglobulin revealed statistically significant difference between group-I and group-II (Table-1)(Figure-1) . The number of the specimens stained with anti-caveolin-1 was less in group I (p=0.0024)
*Conclusions: Variations in the expression paterns of Caveolin-1 molecule may have a protective effect in the kidney transplant patients with BK virus viremia.
Anti-Caveolin-1 positive | Anti-Caveolin-1 negative | Total | |
Group I | 2 | 10 | 12 |
Group II | 15 | 4 | 19 |
