The aim of this study is to determine if transplant quiz scores given prior to discharge were predictive of known patient risk factors and if the scores were associated with clinical outcomes.
Methods: This is a single center, retrospective cohort study of 93 adult liver transplant recipients between 1/2014-12/2016. All patients who completed a discharge quiz were included. The quiz included questions related to medications, lab draws, rejection, and infection. Pediatric and multi-organ transplant recipients were excluded. Standard univariate statistics were utilized for analyses.
Results: 93 patients were included. Baseline demographics, including age, gender, MELD, and donor characteristics were similar between those that had high and low quiz scores. African-Americans tended to have lower quiz scores (Table 1). Those scoring 80% or below on the discharge quiz had more than three times higher rate of 30-day readmission (p=0.066) and almost twice the rate of readmissions at 1-year post-transplant (p=0.042, Figure 1). Graft loss and death were similar between those with low and high quiz scores (Table 1).
Conclusion: These results demonstrate that low quiz scores taken in recently transplanted liver transplant recipients, just prior to discharge, may be capable of identifying high-risk recipients. Quiz content may need to be reassessed to emphasize the importance of potential complications and medications used for immunosuppression and infection.
