The aim of this study is to determine if transplant quiz scores given prior to discharge were predictive of known patient risk factors and if the scores were associated with clinical outcomes.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 198 adult kidney recipients transplanted between 2014-16. All patients who completed a discharge quiz were included. The quiz included questions related to medications, lab draws, rejection, and infection. Pediatric and multi-organ transplant recipients were excluded. Univariate and multivariable statistics were utilized for analyses.

Results: 198 patients were included. Quiz scores of ≤75% were more common in African-Americans (AAs), Medicaid insured, deceased donor (DD) recipients and those deemed cognitively impaired during the social worker assessment (Table 1 and 2); validating that the quiz identifies traditionally high-risk patients. Readmissions and overall healthcare utilization were higher in those with quiz score >75% (Table 3).

Conclusion: These results demonstrate that low quiz scores adequately identified traditionally high-risk kidney transplant recipients (AAs, Medicaid, DD and cognitively impaired). However, low quiz scores were associated with lower readmissions and healthcare utilization, which may reflect focused efforts by the transplant center and clinicians to mitigate risks in these traditionally high-risk patients.
