*Purpose: Video-based education is an emerging method to address low health literacy, a barrier to informed patient decision-making. A two-dimensional animated educational video was developed from a 7th grade reading level script to inform patients about a transplant topic (figure 1)
Acceptability of educational animated videos has rarely been tested amongst transplant patients.
*Methods: Kidney transplant clinic patients at Erie County Medical Center between May-July 2018 (n=111) were shown the 2-minute video displayed on a computer. In addition to knowledge assessments, participants completed a pre-video sociodemographic survey and a post-video satisfaction survey of 7-likert style questions (range:1-5) bounded by strongly disagree/agree.
*Results: Most participants agreed that they felt comfortable using videos to learn (94%), that the video was easy to watch (99%), acceptable in duration (91%), comfortable to watch (94%), engaging (97%), that they would recommend the video to a friend (98%) and use videos like this in the future (95%) . 24 participants indicated a neutral/negative response to at least one satisfaction question and 87 indicated universally positive responses. There were no between-group differences between positive and neutral/negative responders (table 1)
Most participants (85%) preferred to learn on a computer, iPad, or cellphone versus on paper. Of those that preferred an electronic learning method, 47% preferred to learn with a doctor’s office computer whereas 53% preferred to learn via a computer at home, iPad, or cell phone.
*Conclusions: Transplant patients find animated video education appealing and prefer computer-based learning. These findings underscore the potential value of online information delivery using animated video.
