*Purpose: Meeting the regulatory requirements for ABO Verification and solid Organ Check-In procedures is a constant challenge for transplant programs due to continuous turnover in OR staff and changes in leadership.
*Methods: An online training module educating users on Organ Check-In and ABO Verification requirements was created and assigned to the OR staff. Immediately after completion of the education module, a quiz requiring a passing score of 84% was administered in order to assess comprehension of these important regulatory requirements. Poster-sized flowcharts were also created and served as a quick reference guide, outlining the ABO verification process for living donors and all recipients (Figure 1). These flowcharts were displayed in the operating rooms regularly utilized for living donor and recipient procedures. Portable, laminated versions were available for use in additional operating rooms as needed.
*Results: Individual solid organ program and overall compliance were evaluated before and after implementation (Table 1). Overall compliance increased from 77% to 98% within 2 years of implementation. Individual organ program compliance increased to 95% for the adult kidney transplant program and to 100% for the pediatric kidney, living donor kidney and liver transplant programs by the second year of implementation.
*Conclusions: Utilizing online training modules and flowcharts facilitated our ability to increase our transplant program’s regulatory compliance with ABO Verification and Organ Check-In procedures. These visual guides, training modules and quiz questions can easily be duplicated at any transplant program to assist with the education of new OR staff and improve compliance with these important regulatory requirements.
