*Purpose: Disparity between the kidney waitlist and organs available continues to increase. Increasing living kidney donation may provide a solution to decreasing disparity.
*Methods: In 2018 our center concentrated efforts to improve education and focus on living kidney donation. We partnered with National Kidney Foundation to provide an educational program called the Big Ask Big Give (BABG). We have completed 2 seminars, May and October of 2018. Our center also began using a web based system to manage referrals through the National Kidney Registry called the Donor Automated Screening and History (DASH) system. We collected data on number of participants in the BABG program, demographics, and the number of referrals. We also collected data on the total number of referrals and evaluations since instituting the programs.
*Results: There were 27 patients that participated in the BABG (18 in the May and 13 in the October). There were 15 Caucasian, 11 Black, and 1 Hispanic participants. There were 17 females and 10 males. Twelve of the participants have received new referrals since attending BABG; five of them had not received any referrals prior to BABG. After instituting DASH (May 2018), we compared 2018 data through October to the 2017 data. Our center experienced a 69% increase in referrals,15% increase in evaluations, 45% increase in approvals, and 21% increase in donations.
*Conclusions: Educating recipients on the benefits of living donation and teaching them how to pursue living donation appears to have increased the number of referrals for these patients. Instituting a web based platform to manage donor referrals makes it easier for donors to self-refer and has resulted in increased referrals and evaluations at our institution.
